Much like when I came out as transgender in the strip itself, Dandy's chief concerns is how such revelations will affect his position. And in this case, his concern is mostly focused on having to be nicer to Pumpkin now out of fear of bodily harm.

But it was kinda fun to do a bait and switch and make it look like Dandy was going to be a mouthpiece for those that might take issue with Lutie and Pumpkin being a couple.

Dandy, like myself, will not be having any of that nonsense. ;)

Relationships are a funny thing in the strip. Many of the characters are in on again/off again relationships with each other but Pumpkin and Lutie here have never been shown to be in any since their introductions in the strip.

This strip's revelation is an idea I've been floating around for a few years now and have been reluctant to bring in for obvious reasons. (People can be very close minded and ignorant concerning such things.) But in my mind, they've been a couple for a while now in the background and it's only now being mentioned in the strip.
