This gag was inspired by an actual conversation between myself and my sig ot, Heidi in the toy section of Wal Mart. I made the exact joke Dandy drops in the 3rd panel here and then wrote it down for future reference.

I really like strips like this that have what I call "stealth punchlines". Jokes in the dialogue peppered in the middle BEFORE the final panel gag.

Much like when I came out as transgender in the strip itself, Dandy's chief concerns is how such revelations will affect his position. And in this case, his concern is mostly focused on having to be nicer to Pumpkin now out of fear of bodily harm.

But it was kinda fun to do a bait and switch and make it look like Dandy was going to be a mouthpiece for those that might take issue with Lutie and Pumpkin being a couple.

Dandy, like myself, will not be having any of that nonsense. ;)

Relationships are a funny thing in the strip. Many of the characters are in on again/off again relationships with each other but Pumpkin and Lutie here have never been shown to be in any since their introductions in the strip.

This strip's revelation is an idea I've been floating around for a few years now and have been reluctant to bring in for obvious reasons. (People can be very close minded and ignorant concerning such things.) But in my mind, they've been a couple for a while now in the background and it's only now being mentioned in the strip.

This is a gag I've been wanting to draw for over 15 years now. I conceived of this basic story line before even launching the strip as an online webcomic. Back then, in my infinite optimism, I imagined that I could make this story as an animated special all by myself.

When I launched the strip online, I decided to sit on this tale, thinking that ONE day I'd have the resources to do it in animation. But this year, I decided to just put it out there as a series of strips.
