This gag was inspired by an actual conversation between myself and my sig ot, Heidi in the toy section of Wal Mart. I made the exact joke Dandy drops in the 3rd panel here and then wrote it down for future reference.

I really like strips like this that have what I call "stealth punchlines". Jokes in the dialogue peppered in the middle BEFORE the final panel gag.
